Omagh 2010 Taskforce launch Night Time and Evening Economy Research Study

Omagh 2010 Taskforce commissioned The Leisure Consultancy, in association with Total Consulting to undertake research into the evening and night time economy in Omagh with a view to maximising its potential. The aim was to attract a larger and more varied number of visitors to Omagh both in the evening and at night time.

Commenting on the study Perry McDonnell, Chairman of Omagh Taskforce said, “The evening and night time economy is now recognised as an integral part of a town’s economy. It has an important role to play in terms of creativity, leisure, cultural identity and overall economic benefit for a town centre. The evening and night economy can not only boost the incomes of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops but it can also encourage people, particularly families, to venture into a town in the evenings making the town centre much more vibrant and lively. We want to see the evening economy develop in Omagh so that it appeals to local residents, visitors and businesses. This research will examine the current offering in Omagh and identify opportunities for development in the future ensuring that we have a mixed evening economy that appeals to all.”

He added, “The development of the evening and night time economy in Omagh is an important next step in the continued development of the town and in achieving the Omagh 2010 Vision. We look forward to hearing peoples views as to how this should best move forward.”

The challenge for Omagh over the next few years is to steer the development of a vibrant, inclusive evening economy that is sustained by a healthy balance of mixed uses within an environment in which all ages can enjoy a range of attractions without fear, intimidation and without diminishing the amenity of others. It is hoped that developing the evening and night time economy would help benefit the community and the overall economy of the area.

The consultant team from Total Consulting and The Leisure Consultancy have undertaken analysis, consultation and research in support of a framework to develop and manage Omagh’s evening and night time economy, with delivery of the final study in June 2005.
